Courtesy of Mr. Wizard: You rent me an HDTV cable receiver, advertised as having HDMI output. My TV has HDMI inputs. Wonderful. So why does the tech installing said cable receiver insist on using component inputs? Oh, because that HDMI port isn't enabled. Why would you not enable that port knowing practically everyone who knows a little something about their TV would want to use it!? Whoever made that call needs a beatdown with my now surplus HDMI cable.
